Launch Position
SafestApps supports informed participation, constructive disagreement, factual corrections and meaningful reader feedback. A trustworthy community environment requires more than providing a space for comments. It requires appropriate moderation, safety measures, privacy protections, reporting channels, consistent enforcement, appeals and sufficient resources to respond when problems arise.
For this reason, public comments are not enabled on the SafestApps public launch. The absence of comments does not prevent reader participation or accountability. Readers may engage through dedicated channels for corrections, complaints, rights of reply, contributor proposals, accessibility feedback, privacy requests, security reports and general editorial communication.
Current Status
At launch, public article comments are disabled, new comment submissions are not accepted, legacy comment forms or invitations are closed, comment counts do not represent an active community where no community feature exists, automated spam comments are not published and discussion does not take place through an unmoderated public forum. If this position changes, SafestApps will update this page before public comments are introduced.
Why Comments Are Disabled
Comments can provide useful expertise, corrections, practical experience, additional sources, local knowledge, constructive disagreement and reader questions. They can also create risks involving harassment, threats, hate, discrimination, doxxing, defamation, impersonation, spam, malware, manipulation, child safety, privacy violations, coordinated abuse, misinformation, non-consensual intimate material, commercial promotion and disclosure of confidential information.
SafestApps will not describe an unmoderated or insufficiently controlled environment as responsible community participation.

Future Community Features
SafestApps may consider moderated comments, reader questions, expert responses, letters to the editor, structured discussions, member forums, contributor communities, live discussions, surveys, reader panels, event participation or other forms of engagement. No feature will be introduced until SafestApps has established appropriate moderation, public rules, privacy information, retention practices, age and child-safety measures, reporting tools, appeal procedures, identity and impersonation safeguards, spam controls, security, accessibility, legal review, emergency escalation and sufficient operational capacity.
Community Principles
Where community features are introduced, participation will be guided by relevance, evidence, respect, accountability, privacy, safety, transparency and accessibility. Contributions should meaningfully relate to the relevant article or discussion. Factual claims should be capable of support when reasonably challenged. Criticism of ideas, institutions, products and public conduct is permitted, while threats, targeted abuse and dehumanizing conduct are not. Users must not impersonate others or conceal commercial campaigns deceptively. Private information must not be exposed. Community features and reporting channels should remain reasonably accessible.
Permitted Disagreement
SafestApps would not remove a contribution simply because it criticizes an article, challenges SafestApps, disagrees with an author, questions an institution, expresses an unpopular opinion, identifies a possible error, questions a sponsor, criticizes a company or challenges a political position. The publication distinguishes disagreement from harassment and does not use moderation to create an artificial appearance of universal agreement.
Prohibited Conduct
If public comments are introduced, prohibited conduct will include credible threats, encouragement of violence, targeted harassment, stalking, doxxing, disclosure of private addresses or identity documents, hate speech, dehumanizing attacks, sexual harassment, non-consensual intimate material, child exploitation, impersonation and fraudulent representation. It will also include malware, phishing, credential theft, spam, paid-link placement, undisclosed advertising, coordinated manipulation, false emergency information, instructions facilitating serious unlawful harm, publication of passwords or private keys, exposure of confidential sources, repeated disruption, unlawful copyright infringement and other conduct creating unacceptable risk.
Good-faith security research conducted within the Security and Vulnerability Disclosure Policy will be handled separately.
Personal Attacks, Hate and Discrimination
Criticism should address conduct, evidence, decisions, policies, arguments, public roles, products, organizations or documented behavior. Attacks based on irrelevant personal characteristics, family members, appearance, disability, ethnicity, religion, gender, sexual orientation or another protected characteristic are not acceptable. Public figures may be criticized strongly, but threats and doxxing remain prohibited.
Community features must not be used to encourage hatred, exclusion or violence against people based on protected or vulnerable characteristics. Reporting or discussing discriminatory language may be permitted where relevant and properly contextualized. Slurs should not be repeated merely to provoke, intimidate or target another person.
Threats and Violence
A contribution containing a credible or specific threat may be removed and escalated. SafestApps may consider immediacy, target, capability, location, context, repetition, references to weapons, personal information, previous conduct and potential risk to children or vulnerable people. Relevant records may be preserved, and an appropriate authority may be contacted where legally required or reasonably necessary to protect life or safety. SafestApps cannot guarantee emergency response.
Privacy and Doxxing
Users must not publish another person’s home address, personal telephone number, identity number, private email, financial-account information, health information, exact private location, children’s information, private photographs, workplace access information, login credentials, intimate information or confidential communications without a clear lawful and legitimate public-interest basis accepted by SafestApps. Information may constitute doxxing even when individual elements were previously available elsewhere if combining them creates a foreseeable safety or privacy risk.
Children
Community participation involving children requires additional safeguards. Before activating a feature likely to be used by children, SafestApps will establish an age approach, privacy controls, guardian considerations, child-safety reporting, grooming prevention, advertising restrictions, profiling limitations, retention rules, educational guidance, escalation procedures and responsible personnel. Children should not be encouraged to publicly disclose personal contact information, school details, location, family information or private images.
Self-Harm and Crisis Content
Community material involving suicide, self-harm or an immediate crisis will receive sensitive handling. SafestApps may remove encouragement, graphic instructions, competitive or romanticized content, targeted coercion, method details creating foreseeable risk or material that exploits a vulnerable person. A person who appears to face immediate danger may be directed toward appropriate local emergency or professional support where practicable. SafestApps is not an emergency service.
Misinformation
Not every inaccurate statement necessarily requires removal. Moderation may consider severity, available evidence, immediate harm, public-health risk, election impact, impersonation, coordinated activity, opportunity for correction, apparent intent and whether contextual information is sufficient. A disputed political or scientific position is not removed merely because it is controversial. False practical information involving voting, safety, health or emergencies may require prompt intervention.
Defamation and Allegations
Users must not use comments to publish unsupported allegations of criminality, fraud, abuse or other serious misconduct. A serious allegation may require removal or restriction, a request for supporting evidence, legal review, a right of reply, referral to the Editorial Office or another reporting process. A comment thread is not a substitute for a properly sourced and verified investigation.
Commercial and Political Manipulation
Community features must not be used for undisclosed advertising, backlink sales, affiliate promotion, recruitment schemes, repeated self-promotion, fabricated testimonials, reputation-management campaigns, political astroturfing, paid endorsements, referral spam, deceptive fundraising or hidden client campaigns. A person with a material commercial interest should disclose it where the contribution is otherwise permitted.
Political disagreement and advocacy may be permitted where relevant. Users must not impersonate candidates, conceal paid campaigns, publish false voting instructions, coordinate harassment, threaten election workers, use synthetic media deceptively, suppress lawful participation or present paid political communication as ordinary reader opinion.
Coordinated Manipulation and Impersonation
Coordinated activity may involve multiple false identities, repeated identical comments, purchased engagement, organized harassment, hidden campaign control, bot activity, manufactured consensus, reputation attacks or link placement. SafestApps may remove or restrict coordinated activity even when an individual message appears acceptable in isolation, but will not publicly accuse users of coordination without sufficient evidence.
Users must not impersonate readers, authors, editors, journalists, companies, public authorities, political candidates, experts, sources, sponsors or SafestApps. Parody and satire must be sufficiently clear that a reasonable person is unlikely to mistake them for genuine communications.
Links, Images and Attachments
Links may be removed where they lead to malware, phishing, unlawful material, deceptive services, personal data, non-consensual material, paid-link schemes, credential theft, spam, hidden advertising or another unsafe destination. A link will not be removed merely because it criticizes SafestApps or an advertiser.
User uploads will not be enabled until appropriate storage, malware scanning, rights review, privacy safeguards, synthetic-media assessment, child-safety controls, moderation and retention systems are available. Images and attachments may be reviewed for file type, rights, personal information, intimate content, graphic material, location information, document metadata and relevance.
Moderation Model and Actions
Possible moderation models include pre-moderation, post-moderation, trusted-user moderation, limited-topic discussions, time-limited comments, expert-only responses, invite-only participation or no public comments. The selected model will be described accurately. SafestApps will not claim that every comment is reviewed before publication unless pre-moderation actually operates.
Moderation actions may include no action, warning, request for evidence, contextual labeling, reduced visibility, removal, thread closure, temporary restriction, permanent restriction, account suspension, link removal, record preservation, referral or safety escalation. Editing a user’s words will generally be avoided unless transparent and the original meaning is preserved. Removal is generally preferable to silently rewriting a contribution.
Reasons and Appeals
Where practical and safe, a user will receive a concise explanation identifying the relevant content, rule, action, duration and appeal route. Explanations may be limited where additional detail would expose security controls, another person’s privacy, a confidential report or an active investigation.
An appeal process will exist before comments are activated. An appeal should identify the moderated content, action, reason the decision should be reconsidered, relevant context, supporting evidence and requested remedy. Where possible, appeals will receive a fresh review. Repeated appeals without meaningful new grounds may be closed.
Reporting and Records
A future community system will provide accessible methods to report threats, harassment, hate, impersonation, privacy violations, child-safety concerns, spam, commercial promotion, misinformation, malware, copyright issues, self-harm risks, synthetic deception and other material concerns. Reporters should not be required to provide unnecessary personal information.
SafestApps may maintain proportionate records of content, user, report, action, rule, reviewer, date, appeal, outcome, safety escalation and retention decision. Such records will be protected and retained only for as long as reasonably necessary.
User Privacy and External Platforms
If comments are introduced, SafestApps will disclose public profile information, IP and security logging, cookies, moderation records, retention practices, providers, legal disclosures, deletion rights, archival treatment and the effect of account closure. Closing an account may not automatically remove public comments where preservation is necessary and lawful, and the applicable treatment will be explained.
Discussion taking place on external social platforms is also subject to the rules and privacy practices of those platforms. SafestApps may moderate or limit replies on its own external accounts where available tools permit, but it cannot control every repost, response or discussion hosted elsewhere.
Letters, Questions, Surveys and Contests
SafestApps may accept letters or structured reader responses while comments remain unavailable. Letters may be edited for length, clarity, accuracy, privacy, legal risk, relevance, abuse, duplication and disclosure. Identity and material interests may be verified proportionately, and publication of a letter does not make its contents an institutional position.
Reader questions may help inform explainers, reviews or interviews, but submission does not guarantee a response, publication, confidentiality, attribution or agreement with the premise. Sensitive source information should not be submitted through an ordinary public question form.
Surveys should explain who conducts them, their purpose, information collected, representativeness, retention, publication, anonymity, incentives, sponsors and privacy treatment. A self-selected reader survey will not be described as representative of the general public without an appropriate methodology. Any contest or giveaway will require separate rules addressing organizer, eligibility, jurisdiction, entry period, prize, selection, data use, sponsor and applicable law.
Consistency and Transparency
Moderation is applied consistently across political perspectives, companies, advertisers, critics, supporters, public figures, ordinary users, contributors and SafestApps itself. Consistency does not require identical treatment where severity, context and risk differ. An advertiser or sponsor does not receive special protection from lawful criticism.
If community functions are introduced, the Editorial Transparency Report may summarize submissions, removals, restrictions, appeals, restored content, threats, privacy reports, spam, coordinated manipulation, child-safety issues, response times, policy changes and operational limitations.
Activation Review
Before any public community feature is activated, SafestApps will confirm that rules, moderation ownership, trained reviewers, coverage arrangements, reporting channels, appeals, privacy, cookie treatment, security, child safety, accessibility, retention, legal review, incident escalation, provider contracts, backups and abuse testing are in place.
