Commitment
SafestApps values the privacy of its readers, contributors, sources, partners and visitors. We aim to handle personal information responsibly, transparently and only when there is a reasonable purpose for collecting or using it. This policy describes how information may be obtained, used, disclosed, stored and protected through the SafestApps website and its related editorial, publishing, communication and business activities.
SafestApps may be accessed by people in different countries. Privacy rights, legal requirements and permitted uses can differ depending on a person’s jurisdiction, the nature of the information, the reason for processing and whether the activity relates to editorial, commercial, contractual, technical or legal functions. Nothing in this policy is intended to remove a privacy right that applicable law does not permit us to exclude.
Who Is Responsible
SafestApps, through its independent Publisher or operating entity, is responsible for personal information where it determines why and how that information is processed in connection with the publication and website. Unless another verified legal operator is specifically identified on the Publisher and Legal Information page, references to SafestApps in this policy mean the entity responsible for operating the SafestApps publication and website.
Privacy questions and requests relating to personal information may be directed to privacy@safestapps.com. SafestApps does not claim to have appointed a data-protection officer unless such an appointment has actually been made and is required or appropriate for its operations.
Scope
This policy covers information processed through visits to the SafestApps website, email communications, contact and submission forms, correction requests, complaints, rights-of-reply requests, contributor applications, author administration, newsletter subscriptions, advertising and commercial enquiries, sponsorships, affiliate relationships, accessibility requests, security reports, source communications, interviews, editorial research, publishing activities, legal communications, website protection, analytics, cookies, events, licensing and related business records.
Certain services or activities may be governed by an additional privacy notice or specific terms. Where that happens, the additional notice should be considered together with this policy.
Personal Information
Personal information is information that identifies, or could reasonably be used to identify, an individual. Depending on the circumstances, SafestApps may handle names, email addresses, telephone numbers, company or organization details, job titles, professional profiles, biographies, subscription details, correspondence, article-related information, evidence submitted with complaints or corrections, contributor pitches, agreements, invoices and payment information, publication records, author photographs, interview recordings, quotations, source information, technical information, device and browser details, IP addresses, approximate geographic information, cookie preferences, security records, referral data, requested pages, timestamps, accessibility information voluntarily provided, public records, publicly available social-media content, photographs, audio, video and other information that a person voluntarily submits or that may lawfully be obtained for editorial purposes.
SafestApps seeks to avoid collecting sensitive information that is unnecessary for the relevant purpose.
Sources of Information
Information may come directly from an individual, their authorized representative, an author, contributor or source, or through SafestApps’ website, email and publishing systems. It may also be obtained from public records, courts, regulators, government publications, companies, institutions, professional websites, publicly accessible social platforms, service providers, commercial or advertising partners, security researchers, analytics tools, cookies and similar technologies, or through lawful editorial research.
Information being publicly accessible does not automatically make every possible use appropriate. SafestApps considers relevance, accuracy, context, necessity and applicable privacy obligations before using information for editorial purposes.
Purposes
SafestApps may process personal information to operate the website, protect its systems, publish articles and reviews, conduct editorial research, investigate matters of public interest, communicate with sources and subjects, verify information or authority, manage authors and contributors, assess pitches, commission and edit material, administer rights and licenses, respond to enquiries, process corrections and complaints, manage rights of reply and deliver requested newsletters.
Information may also be used to maintain privacy choices, limit spam and abuse, identify security problems, respond to vulnerability reports, support accessibility, administer advertising and sponsorship arrangements, process invoices and payments, maintain financial and tax records, comply with legal requirements, establish or defend legal claims, protect readers and sources, improve website performance and usability, understand aggregate audience activity, preserve published material and maintain business continuity.
SafestApps does not use personal information for an unrelated purpose merely because it has already been collected.
Lawful Basis
The legal basis for processing depends on the activity and the laws that apply. SafestApps may rely on consent, contractual necessity, steps taken at a person’s request before entering into an agreement, legal obligations, legitimate editorial, security, administrative or commercial interests, protection of vital interests, public-interest grounds where recognized, freedom of expression and information, applicable journalistic or editorial exemptions, legal claims or another lawful basis available under the relevant legal framework.
Different activities may rely on different legal grounds. For example, the basis for analytics may not be the same as the basis for contributor administration, commercial communications or public-interest reporting. Where consent is the basis, it can generally be withdrawn for future processing through the available method. Withdrawal does not make earlier lawful processing unlawful.
Editorial and Journalistic Processing
SafestApps may use personal information in connection with technology reporting, product reviews, investigations, commentary, analysis, public-interest coverage, archives and other editorial work. This may include information concerning companies, public figures, professionals, institutions, ordinary individuals, interviews, public records, legal proceedings, allegations, professional activities, photographs and quotations.
Privacy rights and related obligations may operate differently when information is processed for journalism, public-interest reporting or freedom of expression. This does not mean that every private detail is suitable for publication. SafestApps considers accuracy, relevance, proportionality, source protection, potential harm, public interest and applicable legal requirements when handling personal information in editorial work.
Sensitive Information
Information relating to health, disability, race or ethnicity, religion, political views, trade-union activity, sexual life, sexual orientation, biometric or genetic information, criminal allegations, children, intimate relationships, precise location, financial accounts, identity documents and confidential communications may require additional protection.
SafestApps handles such information only when there is a legitimate and necessary reason supported by an appropriate legal, editorial, contractual, consent or public-interest basis. General contact forms are not intended to be used for casually submitting sensitive personal information.
Children
The general SafestApps website is not designed around children creating public user accounts. The publication may nevertheless contain reporting that concerns children or may be accessible to younger readers. Additional care is taken when an identifiable child is involved.
SafestApps considers the child’s age and maturity, applicable consent requirements, involvement of parents or guardians where appropriate, safety concerns, public interest, potential long-term consequences and the permanence of online publication. A parent, guardian or institution does not automatically have unrestricted authority to disclose or authorize publication of a child’s private information.
Website Technical Data
When someone accesses SafestApps, the website and its service providers may process technical information necessary to deliver content, maintain security, identify abuse, diagnose technical problems, manage consent, distribute traffic, monitor performance and understand website usage where permitted.
This information may include IP address, browser type, device information, operating system, requested page, referring page, access time, approximate region, error information, security events, consent status and identifiers associated with cookies or similar technologies.
Optional technologies and their purposes may be described through Cookie Settings and the applicable cookie information available on the website.
Cookies and Similar Technologies
SafestApps may use essential cookies and, where permitted or enabled, optional analytics, advertising, personalization and similar technologies. Where applicable law requires consent, optional technologies are not activated before an appropriate choice is made.
Visitors may decline optional technologies and may be able to change their preferences later. Cookie preferences do not necessarily control processing that is required for security, legal compliance, editorial operations or other essential website functions.
Correspondence
When someone contacts SafestApps, relevant information may be retained to understand, investigate and respond to the communication. This can include the sender’s name and contact information, message, attachments, date, routing information, response, related article, supporting evidence and action taken.
People should avoid sending passwords, private encryption keys, payment-card information, complete medical files, identity documents or unrelated sensitive material through ordinary contact channels unless SafestApps specifically requests it through a secure process.
Corrections, Complaints and Rights of Reply
SafestApps may process information necessary to investigate a correction, complaint or request for a right of reply. This can include verifying the requester, identifying the relevant article, reviewing evidence, communicating with editors or authors, protecting confidential sources, reaching a decision, publishing an appropriate correction or response, retaining an accountability record and protecting legal rights.
Published corrections and responses are written to avoid unnecessary disclosure of personal information. Confidential source identities are not disclosed simply because a person requests information about them.
Authors and Contributors
SafestApps may maintain contributor records containing identity details, preferred publishing name, biography, contact information, qualifications, affiliations, conflicts of interest, payment and tax information, contracts, pitches, drafts, source material, declarations, editorial correspondence, publication history, corrections and complaints.
Public author profiles contain information considered suitable for publication. Identity documents or other verification information are requested only when reasonably necessary and are handled with appropriate safeguards.
Newsletters
When SafestApps provides newsletters, it may process an email address, subscription preferences, consent records where required, confirmation status, delivery information, bounce records, unsubscribe status, limited engagement information where lawfully permitted and suppression records.
Subscribers can unsubscribe using the available link or by contacting SafestApps. An unsubscribed address may remain in a restricted suppression record so future unwanted messages are not sent. Newsletter registration is not intentionally combined with unrelated optional processing in a misleading manner.
Commercial Enquiries
Advertising, sponsorship and partnership records may contain organization details, business contact information, representative names, proposals, clients, campaigns, payment and invoice details, contracts, disclosure requirements, destination links, communications and relevant performance or security information.
Where necessary, this information may be shared with service providers responsible for accounting, payment processing, legal services, technical operations or other functions required to administer the commercial relationship.
Security and Accessibility Reports
Security reports may include a researcher’s name or chosen identity, contact information, affected system, technical findings, relevant IP or log information, proof of concept, preferred credit, disclosure preferences, proposed disclosure timing and related correspondence.
Access to such information is restricted according to the sensitivity of the report and may be retained for remediation, security, legal and accountability purposes.
Accessibility requests may include information about the affected page, technical barrier, device, browser, assistive technology, preferred format and any disability-related information a person voluntarily chooses to provide. SafestApps does not require a person to disclose a medical diagnosis merely to report an accessibility problem.
Public Sources and Social Media
SafestApps may consult publicly accessible records and social-media platforms when conducting legitimate editorial research. Before using such information, the publication may consider its relevance, authenticity, reliability, context, the person’s role, reasonable expectations of privacy, vulnerability, potential harm, permanence and public interest.
Information found online may be incomplete, manipulated, incorrectly attributed or presented without its original context. Public availability alone is therefore not treated as proof that information is accurate or appropriate for publication.
Sharing
SafestApps may provide necessary information to service providers that support hosting, content delivery, email distribution, cybersecurity, backups, analytics, consent management, payments, accounting, legal services, technical support, accessibility and general administration. Information is shared according to the function being performed and appropriate contractual or security requirements.
Information may also be disclosed where required by law, valid legal process, an authorized representative, protection of rights or safety, investigation of abuse, establishment or defense of legal claims, organizational restructuring, legitimate editorial collaboration or consent.
SafestApps does not treat personal information as a commodity for unrestricted sale. This does not prevent legitimate advertising, affiliate or commercial services where personal information is processed lawfully and the relevant relationship is appropriately disclosed.
International Processing
Because SafestApps may serve readers and work with service providers internationally, personal information can sometimes be processed in countries other than the country where the individual lives.
Where applicable law requires safeguards for international transfers, SafestApps seeks to use an appropriate legal mechanism, such as an adequacy decision, contractual safeguards or another recognized transfer method. Such mechanisms cannot eliminate every risk, so the nature of the provider, location, information, security measures and purpose of the transfer may also be considered.
Retention
SafestApps keeps personal information for as long as there is a reasonable operational, editorial, legal, security, accounting or accountability reason to retain it. Retention periods differ according to the type of information and purpose.
For example, unsuccessful contributor submissions are not intended to be retained forever without a reason; newsletter information may remain until an unsubscribe request and limited suppression period; financial records may need to be maintained for legally required periods; correction and complaint records may be preserved for accountability; source material may require extended confidentiality; security logs may be retained for investigation and defense; and published articles and correction histories may remain part of the permanent editorial archive.
Information that no longer has a legitimate continuing purpose may be deleted, anonymized or otherwise securely disposed of during periodic reviews.
Security and Incidents
SafestApps uses reasonable technical and organizational safeguards appropriate to the type and sensitivity of information involved. Measures may include controlled access, unique user accounts, multi-factor authentication, encrypted connections, backups, software updates, malware protection, logging, restricted privileges, secure disposal, source protection, incident-response procedures and appropriate assessment of service providers.
No internet-based system can be guaranteed completely secure. If SafestApps becomes aware of a security incident involving personal information, it may take steps to contain the issue, preserve relevant evidence, determine what information was affected, reduce potential harm, investigate the cause, review third-party involvement and improve safeguards.
Where legally required, SafestApps will notify relevant authorities and affected individuals within the applicable requirements.
Rights
Depending on applicable law, individuals may have rights relating to their personal information, including the right to obtain information about processing, access data, correct inaccurate information, request deletion, restrict certain processing, object to processing, obtain portable information, withdraw consent, challenge certain automated decisions, complain to a relevant supervisory authority or seek a legal remedy.
These rights are subject to applicable exceptions and limitations. Restrictions may apply where necessary to protect journalism, freedom of expression, confidential sources, public-interest reporting, another person’s rights, legal obligations, security, fraud prevention, legal proceedings, archival integrity or another lawful interest.
Exercising Rights
Privacy and rights requests may be submitted to privacy@safestapps.com. Requests should provide enough information for SafestApps to understand the request, such as the requester’s name, contact details, relevant activity or article, approximate dates and the nature of the information concerned.
SafestApps may use proportionate identity verification to prevent unauthorized disclosure. A full identity document will not be requested where a less intrusive verification method is reasonably sufficient. Requests are handled within the periods required by applicable law, subject to lawful extensions and limitations.
Deletion and Published Journalism
Deleting information held for operational purposes is different from removing material that has already been published as journalism or editorial content. Requests concerning published material may be assessed against factors including accuracy, public interest, the person’s role, privacy, passage of time, continuing relevance, rehabilitation, legal developments, source protection, potential harm, historical value, freedom of expression and applicable law.
Depending on the circumstances, SafestApps may correct information, update an article, remove unnecessary personal details, anonymize information, restrict access, apply appropriate technical measures, delete operational records, decline the request, retract material or remove content where justified.
Direct Marketing and Automated Decisions
Individuals may object to direct marketing communications and can unsubscribe using the relevant mechanism. SafestApps may retain limited suppression information to ensure that a person who has opted out is not contacted again. Editorial correspondence, responses to enquiries and necessary service communications are not necessarily classified as direct marketing.
SafestApps does not intend to make significant editorial, complaint or privacy-rights decisions solely through automated processing. Automated tools may assist with spam detection, security monitoring, routing, analytics, transcription, moderation support and administrative functions, while consequential decisions remain subject to appropriate human oversight.
External Links and Policy Changes
SafestApps may link to or embed services operated by third parties. Those services may collect and use information under their own privacy policies, which SafestApps does not control. Where optional third-party tracking is used, it is handled according to applicable consent requirements.
This policy may be revised when SafestApps changes its services, processing activities, technology, legal requirements, providers or privacy practices. Updates are reflected through the applicable revision information and, where appropriate, additional notice is provided for material changes.
Contact and Complaints
Privacy questions, personal-information requests and privacy-rights concerns may be sent to privacy@safestapps.com. Security vulnerabilities or suspected website security issues may be reported to security@safestapps.com. Legal correspondence relating to privacy matters may be sent to legal@safestapps.com. Individuals may also have the right to contact the privacy or data-protection authority responsible for their jurisdiction.
